Vintage WOW NBC Radio Award Lapel Pin
In 1922, the Woodmen of the World organization believed, radio would be the medium of the future for advertising. They pioneered their Omaha radio station WOW, with advertising, as the initial motivation. The station’s first affiliation was with NBC. Over a period of time, WOW also worked with CBS and ABC . The station grew quickly, becoming the most successful in the Midwest. WOW achieved notoriety, with their All American niche. Their slogan was, “The people you know, with the news you trust.” They were the home of Nebraska Corn Husker Sports and The Grand Old Opry’s music. In 1937, WOW NBC received the coveted “Variety Showmanship Award” for excellence in programming. Among their top radio shows, were Fred Allen, Bob Hope, The Chesterfield Supper Club, Burns and Allen, and the Maxwell House Coffee Show. In 1939, this 5,000 watt Omaha station, was the Midwest’s most popular. It now could be heard within a 300 mile radius. During World War 2, WOW’s “The Army Hour War Program” was one of it’s highest rated shows.
