Outreach Campaigns Must Include Email Strategies

Research Shows That Customers Prefer Email

By Daniel Burstein, Marketing Sherpa

The amount of channels available to communicate with stakeholders has expanded dramatically over the past decade and options continue to grow. To help you communicate with your customers, MarketingSherpa asked 2,057 American adults about their channel preferences.

Market Research Question: How do you recommend that companies communicate with you? Please select all that apply.

online marketing channels

Customers Overwhelmingly Prefer Email

“It's not the tired email-is-dead 2003 world anymore. Junk mail didn't kill email the way most 'experts' expected. Instead, the struggle to stay afloat in an ocean of junk made permission emailers much, much stronger.”

This was before the rise of the latest threats to email communication - Facebook, Twitter, smartphones and WhatsApp, etc. However, according to our latest research, email marketing could borrow from Mark Twain's famous quote, “The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”

We discovered that a large majority of U.S. adults - 72 percent - prefer communication with companies to happen through email.

In many ways, customers prefer traditional versus digital tactics - with email being the main exception. Email was unique among digital channels. In fact, it was the only digital channel to outperform old media standbys - postal mail (preferred by 48 percent), television ads (preferred by 34 percent) and print media, such as magazines and newspapers, (preferred by 31 percent).

For example, only 11 percent of people preferred mobile apps and just 7 percent preferred online video ads.

Across Every Demographic, Email Was The Most Popular Channel

There were variations on channel preferences among different demographic groups. For example, 64 percent of those 55+ preferred postal mail, and 41 percent in that cohort preferred print media, while 38 percent of people ages 18-54 preferred postal mail, and 24 percent preferred print media.

However, across almost every demographic surveyed, email was the preferred way to communicate with companies. The only exception was females 65 or older - 64 percent prefer email, and 65 percent prefer postal mail.

Males aged 35-44 were the biggest fans - with 87 percent preferring email as their favorite channel.

Editor's Note: Of course this insight puts a premium on data collection and management. That's the first part of the equation–building your email lists. We have many tactics that we recommend for email harvesting and relationship management.

Microsoft And An Australian Mum; The Next PFs?

Small business is booming; sometimes it needs a payment facilitator and sometimes it becomes one. Sometimes huge business takes the plunge too.

Microsoft this past week introduced a Microsoft Office Service named Microsoft Bookings, designed to ease scheduling of appointments for business owners between themselves, employees and customers. It's a short leap to see that businesses could ask customers making appointments to pay first or lock in a date with a deposit. MindBody comes to mind, with its focus on wellness businesses and appointment bookings and payment enabling.

#Brentrance: Mastercard Buys VocaLink, Now Rules Britannia ACH

MasterCard thinks the U.K. is a jolly good place to do business. With its $920 million purchase of processor VocaLink, the card brand gets a firm owned by 13 U.K. banks that did 11 billion transactions in 2015, but that gaudy number might be the milk and sugar in the cup of tea that is a platform it coveted.

The same day Visa made an ACH-related move by partnering with PayPal so the two mega brands putting their money in bank accounts is no coincidence. ACH represents 50 percent of total electronic payment flows across the world's 50 largest countries.

Non-Profit PFs Won't Like This – Facebook, The Latest PF, Is Going To Take Your Share

Facebook is charging back into the payments space but this time charging hard -- taking 5% on every donation it processes through its recently launched non-profit features, announced to page administrators Tuesday. Facebook introduced a Donate button for 19 select non-profits in 2013, but didn't charge a fee, instead sending 100 percent of donations to the charity. The social media giant says of each donation made through Donate buttons that keep donors on a non-profit's page:

"We're committed to building products that make it as easy and safe as possible for people to contribute to the causes they care about. To make this possible, starting in August, 2% of contributions will be used to cover a portion of the costs of nonprofit vetting, security, and fraud protection, operational costs and payment support and 3% of contributions will go to payment processing. The remaining 95% will go straight to the nonprofit. Facebook's goal is to create a platform for good that's sustainable over the long-term, and not to make a profit from these charitable giving tools.”

Ultimate Business Lead Generation, Automation, Integration And Tracking Platform

The most POWERFUL Traffic tool on the market!

Automate your ENTIRE lead generation…

I'm SO excited to let you know about something that's going to change the way your business runs… for good.

My good friend and mentor Sean Donahoe is known for his amazing software, but in all honesty this blows them ALL out of the park.

It's taken nearly 18 months (And you'll see why) but it's FINALLY here.

We all know that the most important part of any business is traffic, right?

After all, you can have an AMAZING product and an AMAZING sales page, but if no-one actually sees it… no-one can buy.

It's simple math. That's why I love this so much.

You see, on top of everything else it does (Seriously, this thing is a powerhouse) – Sean has put a lot of time and detail into the traffic generation aspects.

It's called “LeadsFlow Pro” and it's about to make generating traffic and converting that traffic 10x easier.

You see, it allows you to set up “Flows” which are essentially a funnel but instead of having one entry point – you can siphon leads from almost ANY source into the flow.

But that's only scratching the surface of this powerful tool… So if you value your business and want to scale,

Go here now and see how this works…

Sean has a great job of breaking down each of the functions of the software on the page, so I strongly suggest you take a look at how LeadsFlow Pro can instantly improve your business!

On China's Payments SuperHighway, Regulators Stomp The Brakes And AsiaPay Hits The Gas

When you drive on rough roads you don't have to slow down, but you do steer more carefully, guiding your car to smoother surfaces. Chinese payment facilitator AsiaPay is welcoming China's recent regulation tightening as a move to help clean up the country's payments industry's fraud-infested reputation. AsiaPay is reading the new road sign as it zooms by, according to our interview with its CEO Joseph Chan, a key player in the massive payments market that is China.

How massive? In their 2015 report on global payments, Capgemini and the Royal Bank of Scotland said China's non-cash transaction volume growth in 2013 led the world's countries at 37 percent, with the region they call Emerging Asia (India, China, Hong Kong and other Asian countries) leading global regions with more than 21 percent growth. Alipay and WeChat are the dominant third party service providers in the online and mobile payments. ApplePay and SamsungPay have entered the market as well, though they use NFC rather than the QR code conduit favored by Alipay and WeChat.

Global Mobile Brew Is Strong

Turkish coffee is almost as strong as Turkish use of mobile devices for banking and shopping and payments, but not as strong as the payments industry action in Europe. The Turks led a group of 15 countries in most of the categories of questions asked about mobile device usage for a recently released report on mobile banking, mobile shopping and mobile payments conducted for ING International by Ipsos.

The report is titled ING International Survey Mobile Banking 2016 but as ING economist Ian Bright explains, one thing has led to another, as it usually does in fintech, and banking only scratches the surface now, four years after its first mobile banking report.

International Business Article On Brexit and What It Means For Us?

. In a recent poll, Americans feel (by a 4:1 margin) that the UK's decision to leave the European Union is about anger and dissatisfaction.

The main reasons the UK voted out were: immigration and donation. The UK's immigration is three times higher than the government-set targets. And in the EU, the UK is a donor nation…which means it contributes more to the EU than it receives in hard currency.

But what does all this mean for Americans? There are many international business videos that may offer advice. But how do we start?

Start with personal investing. Stock markets overreact to news like this, and a general feeling of insecurity can abound. Investors are looking for safe places to put their money, and right now, the UK isn't one of those places.

Insecurity in personal finances breeds fear in business deals. Investment bankers have been reporting that deal flow has all but halted. If you are negotiating with a British firm now, you will be delayed or even stopped by the paralysis.

•Pound Down

As the Brexit process plays out, the British Pound will continue to drop against the relative value of the dollar. Hotels. British goods. Even companies. We can use fewer dollars. Thus, if your firm has a healthy appetite for risk, now may be a good time for an acquisition in England.

•British Recession

This is likely. And lets not forget what effect Greece had on all the world markets. Greece has 11.03 million people and the UK has 65 million (6.5 times larger). Imagine the effect a bad recession in the UK would have on world trade, stock markets, travel and interest rates?

•New nationalism

What is happening in the UK could happen elsewhere. Scotland and Wales have already made rumbles about staying with the European Union. Other countries are considering whether or not the EU is in fact a good deal for them.

•End of the British springboard

Many a U.S. firm has expanded internationally by first going to the UK. The thought behind that (right or wrong) was that the countries both speak English which cuts down on communication errors. Additionally, since England was part of the largest single market in the world, firms could gain a foothold there and expand into the continent. With the antagonism that accompanies the Brexit (after all, they are leaving a club) British goods may not be that welcome.

•Advice for US firms

Shore up your deals in the UK with contingency plans. Make sure you have a way out if recession or even fear take over in the negotiations.

Spread your risk. Make sure the the UK isn't your only European ally. Investigate Scandinavia, The Netherlands and other countries.

Deal in dollars. Use the dollar for your base currencies in all deals. Pay the conversion fee but bank on the safer currency.

Remember, its a British decision, not ours. We can take the opportunity try to be politically neutral.

Work with countries on an individualized basis. Even if (e.g.) Sweden stays in the EU, remember that are still Swedish, with their own language, norms and value systems.

3D Printing Technology Used In Archaeology And Shipwrecks

What Do You Get When You Mix Underwater Shipwrecks And 3D Printing?

“3DP is a great tool for archaeology to understand topography and also in replicating artifacts which can then be used in the classroom to aid or encourage learning,” agrees Michael Petch, co-author of 3D Printing: Rise of the Third Industrial Revolution.

“The most interesting areas of 3DP often span multiple disciplines or open up participation in an activity to a wider group. This can result in useful insights or discoveries from novel approaches.”

1908 5th Ave. & 42nd St. N.Y.C. Photo Post Card Detroit Pub. Co.

In 1899, the first documented mailed postcard was delivered. By 1902, the photo postcard was perfected. The photo was printed on postcard stock, with the postcard information on the back. Only the address and stamp, were allowed on the back. Your message, had to be on the front, over the image. In 1907, the law was changed.  The address and stamp were still on the back. Now you, also could write on the back as well. The image on the front, finally was unmarked. Postcards became, a favorite choice,  for communication. The Detroit Pub. Co. was # 1.   In a good year, Detroit Pub. Co. printed some 7 million images. Photochroms ,  are the earliest European examples of commercially viable color photography. The black & white photograph, needs a coloring process. Detroit Pub. Co. created, their own brand name for the process. Podcast: The Forming Of A PF Platform

The payment facilitator model is exploding because of the vast number of small to medium sized merchants who like their lives uncluttered by multiple partners trying to help them run their business, including those that enable them to accept electronic payments. They want the simplicity of valuable services as well as payment ability, and not from two vendors.

But becoming a payment facilitator is no picnic; who's there to help potential payment facilitators who are hesitant to take on the maze of underwriting, compliance, fraud risk, and monitoring despite the growing evidence that market share and revenue can be gained?

Chargeback Mitigation Date Is Nigh For Visa While Mastercard Says It Has Already Begun

July 22 is TVIF --Thank Visa It's Friday – for non-EMV compliant merchants, especially small merchants and the payment facilitators who target them. That day Visa will ease the burden on merchants not yet compliant with EMV hardware and/or certification of that hardware by blocking all U.S. counterfeit fraud chargebacks under $25 until April 2018.

It's a big deal that the giant brand is paying attention to the little guys, who not only win financially but also save time and headaches involved with chargebacks.

It Was Hip To Be Square In Portland

Not only can small merchants ride the coming wave of mobile payments, they can make more in tips. That was part of the fun learned from a two-month Square promotion in Portland, Ore., that ended last week. The drive highlighted the company's NFC/chip readers in a marketing siege of a city chosen for the tactic because of its high implementation of the new Square hardware and its commerce counterculture.

Apple got in on the techfest because its wallet Apple Pay is the other side of the two-way connection Square needs to boost not only wallet use but comfort with wallet use. Apple hosted a merchant tutorial on Apple Pay in one of its stores one day during the Square campaign.

Podcast: Vantiv's Danner Calls Payfacs 'Epitome of Tech Companies'

Chuck Danner, GM of Payfacs for processor Vantiv, admires not only the software expertise of payfacs but also their creative nature in finding new verticals to help with their value-adds and efficiencies. "We're reliant on these companies for new ideas," Danner said in this week's edition of the PaymentFacilitator.com podcast.

Danner said payfacs are ideal for emerging markets that were either less complicated, non-existent or not tech-enabled, such as healthcare, ride-sharing, crowd funding and vending machines. Because the payfac model is so young, the need and opportunities for payfacs are outpacing the supply. "Growth is phenomenal," Danner said, but closing that gap will take "maturity and time."

Visa Puts Signature On Skirmish With Retailers

Visa filed a suit against Walmart June 30, the latest volley in a legal shootout with large retailers over EMV, chip-and-PIN and signature policies. "To me, it's a clear escalation in the battle, said Rick Oglesby, president of AZ Payments Group and a partner at Double Diamond Group. "It's never a good thing to be wrapped up in a public dispute with one of your largest and most influential customers, and the networks versus Walmart has been ongoing for many years."

The suit claims Walmart surreptitiously tested a process in which shoppers were not given the choice to verify their Visa debit card purchases with a signature. It's the most recent salvo in a battle among Visa and large retailers over the use of either signatures or PINs to verify transactions.
